Become a member to enjoy the benefits of a wide variety of wine related events, but most importantly, to share your passion for wine with other great members.

President's Message

Welcome to the Wine Club of SBR’s website!

All the WCSBR Board and Committee members are working steadfastly, with the help of Ken Gorman, to make this an incredible website for its’ members.

These are some of the many great things you will access to on this website now and in the future:

• Postings of all the Wine Club of SBR general membership’s offsite events, the small in-home wine events that are limited in number (you will be able to sign up for these events on the website) and the events that are a partnership of The Wine Club of SBR, Ranch House Grille, and other clubs here in Saddle Brooke Ranch.

• Educational information on wines. An example - is what we are calling “Recipes for Success in Holding Private Wine Tastings Events” in your homes with other WCSBR members. A step-by- step recipe(s) for various tasting formats that include blind, specific wine types such as Chardonnay, geographic as in wines of Italy, and best bottle formats. It will also include the rating sheets for you to simply download and use at events.

• A member “Wine Cellar” where members that want to find other members that want to buy into their ordered wine allocations or have excess wine from a recently purchased allocation.

• Member Review posting – as an example you are at a restaurant and have what you think is a great of wine – you will have the ability as a member to take a picture of the bottle, write a review and post it from your phone. Our Wine Club Sommeliers are working on a rating system that will be used club wide so that members can post a numerical rating and other members can reference to the rating system. We will be using a numerical system 0-100 as Wine Spectator does.

• Specific wine purveyors and local wine related restaurants will have the ability to post their wine events and offer WCSBR members discounts/coupons.

From time to time, I will post news items on my Report feed. It's found on the page that's opened by clicking the "News" button at the top of this page. Please refer to it from time to stay informed about the club.

  President: Doug Sedam

As a 17-year-old working under the tutelage of Sven Hansen – a Black Hat Chef from Denmark, Doug’s first case of purchased wine ($5.50/bottle) was a Beaulieu Vineyard BV Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1974. At that time Napa Valley was just 1-1/2 hour’s drive from where he was living, and he and Melanie would drive up and spend the day drinking incredible wines at their favorite wineries for FREE! The most important view point that he has developed about wine over many years is simply there is no right or wrong wine to drink, that your palette will guide you to what you enjoy and develop a passion for, and that cost does not dictate a great wine. Doug is happy to tell you more about his experiences when you meet him. He has become a fanatic about Pinot Noirs from California. There are some incredible Pinots, Chardonnays, and Syrahs coming out of the Santa Ynez Valley. Doug is a licensed Real Estate Broker – SBRanchRealty.com and specializes in 55+ communities throughout Arizona. He hopes this Wine Club will transcend just wine and become a great source for others to learn about wine, follow their palette as to what wine is special just for them, and then enjoy that moment with others here at the Ranch.   Vice President: Lisa Brown

Lisa and her husband Mark and their two Goldendoodle Mini’s, Abbie and Mocha, moved to the Ranch 4 years ago from Atherton, CA. Lisa spent over 20 years in high tech in executive positions and now owns a Landscape Design firm there and is still working. Mark is a retired owner of a retail plant nursery. Guess how they met?! Exploring wine is something Lisa and Mark love to do. Since arriving at the Ranch they have hosted several wine tastings and food events in their home and at the Ranch House. They consider themselves beginners in the wine “scene” but look forward to gaining more experience and developing their pallet. Favs for Lisa… BUBBLES!, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tawny Ports. Lisa looks forward to guiding the club, listening to its members and enjoying great wine with fun people!




  Secretary: Vicki Warning

Vicki moved to the Ranch in August 2017. She grew up in Boulder CO, spent some time as a student at the University of Arizona, finished her education at the University of Colorado and moved to Chicago's Lincoln Park to begin her working career. It was there that she met her future husband Kurt. Over the years she has enjoyed wine tasting vacations in the US and Europe, wine hosting events and wine and dining events in their home and meeting many wonderful people. She enjoys Chardonnay, Bordeaux Blancs, Pinot Gris, and Rose'. And the occasional red from their cellar collection. She currently holds the position as Secretary of the Wine Club of SaddleBrooke Ranch.

  Membership: Debbie Chapman

Debbie and her husband moved from Washington State in 2016 where she was born and raised. She worked as an International Financial Manager and had the opportunity to travel—mostly to Asia, Canada, and Brazil. They love food and wine from around the world. They also like to cook a lot of ethnic recipes and try new spices and flavor combinations. They are big fans of Washington State wines and continue to be in several wine clubs from WA. They are looking forward to watching AZ viticulture begin to mature and learning more about the lesser known grapes grown here like Picpoul, Graciano, and Tannat. She is very interested in the educational programs to be available through WCSBR and looking for the hidden gems in less expensive wines.




  PR Chairperson: Jan Storey

As Public Relations and Communication Chair Jan is responsible for working within and outside of SBR to get our club name publicized and to find opportunities to build relationships that will enhance the club. She has long been interested in food and wine and started building her knowledge working in a gourmet wine and cheese shop in college. From there she has taken every opportunity possible to travel and learn more, particularly enjoying trips to Portugal for a Port cooking and tasting class, to the champagne region for bubbles and closer to home her annual trips to Sonoma where she has built a network through some of that regions great wineries. Jan enjoys trying all types of wines but her go to is always sparkling.

  Wine Content: Tim Thomas

Tim will be working with Kurt Warning doing Wine Content for the club. He has been interested in collecting and learning about wine for over 40 years. Early on in his wine journey, Tim found that in addition to tasting wine, he wanted to know about the producer, the area in which the grapes were grown, and how the wine was made. To this end, Tim and Lorrie have traveled to Burgundy and the Rhone in France as well as many trips to wine country in California and Oregon. He enjoys both Old and New World wines with particular favorites being Barolos and Barbarescos from Italy, Rhone Valley wines from France such as Châteauneuf du Pape, Hermitage and Cote Rotie, California Cabernets and Burgundian Pinot Noirs from California and Oregon.




  Wine Content: Kurt Warning

Kurt and his wife Vicki moved to the Ranch in August 2017. He grew up in the south side of Chicago in New Lenox, IL, attended Joliet Junior College and Southern Illinois University and moved to Chicago's Lincoln Park to begin his working career. It was there that he met her future wife Vicki. He began drinking better European wines in the late 70's and started collecting Bordeaux in the early 80's. Along with Vicki he has enjoyed wine tasting vacations in the US and Europe, wine hosting events and wine and dining events in their home and meeting many wonderful people in Chicago wine clubs. He enjoys almost all good wine from around the world and especially red and white wines from France. He currently holds a position as a Wine Content Co-Chair to the SBRWC.




  Website Content: Cathie Stewart

Cathie is a new resident (February 2019) at SBR who is passionate about drinking good wine and eating tasty and well-prepared food. She is a trained accountant/auditor (University of Maryland graduate), a licensed CPA, and am working 50% from my home office at SBR. She and her husband love to travel to different countries, try new food and wine, and enjoy life to its fullest. She loves red wines, especially in the cooler months with a preference for Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Cathie also enjoys a good Montepulciano. During the hot Arizona months, her preference is for a nice cool Chardonnay and occasionally a crisp Sauvignon Blanc (but it must be from New Zealand!). She also enjoys a nice glass of Oregon Pinot Noir or French Burgundy.




  Culinary Chairperson: Cyndy Pykkla

Cyndy moved to SBR with her husband, Chris in May 2019 from Colorado Springs. Following a 20 year career in the USAF and an 8 year occupation with Lockheed Martin Corporation, she decided pursuing a formal education in her passion (culinary arts) rather than a masters degree would suit her better. Although classically trained as a chef, Cyndy prefers to identify herself as “a good cook who graduated from culinary school.” It was in the culinary arts that she focused and explored the relationship between food and wine. She particularly loves unusual pairings such as Southern fried chicken with a beautiful, crisp Segura Viudas Reserve Cava from the Penedes region of Spain. Don’t knock it before you try it! Cyndy enjoys Old and New World wines and is especially fond of Pinot Noirs from the Willamette Valley, Pouilly-Fuisse from central France, and Sauvignon Blancs from Marlborough, New Zealand.
